Joyful Noise Singing

I was reminded of a time in the mid 1940’s when our Aunt Ruby and Uncle Jim came for a visit to our home in Oakland, California. Ruby was robust with fiery red hair. She was gentle and always happy and loved children although she could not bare children of her own.

My brother Allen was not feeling well, so he was spending the day in Mother and Dad’s bed. Aunt Ruby went in to comfort him, and brought our big cat Blackie to visit him also. Soon Blackie was purring loudly, and my aunt asked my brother, “What is the kitty singing?”

Without hesitation, my brother answered, “She is singing Jesus Loves me this I know.”

Ruby laughed, but in her heart she knew that Blackie was indeed singing praises to God.

Do Cats sing?

Yes, animals have various ways to signal that they are satisfied and happy. Our dogs make noises when it is feeding time, and their tails never cease to wag their appreciation and love.

There is a thrill of hearing the birds singing, chickens clucking, roosters crowing, and foxes, wolves, and dogs baying at the moon.

Listen carefully at night to the chirping of crickets and the croaking of frogs.  They will remind us that all creation praises the Lord.

I recently wrote a post about the rocks cry out, the mountains and the hills praise God, and how God himself sings back at us.

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Can you for a moment envision joining with the hosts of angels and adding our amateur praise to their expert harmony?

I believe that is the reason that the Bible instructs us to “Make a Joyful NOISE unto the Lord.”

Whether we sing beautifully compared to others is not the question.

The main thing is to worship the Lord with a voice, in tune or not, it does not matter.

Just make up your own words, and they do not have to rhyme or make sense to you, but they will have special meaning to God.

Reflection on Flying Kites

The March winds were perfect for flying kites, and our large school yard near our home was free of telephone wires, so it was a safe place for us kids to enjoy our kite fun.

Our local Woolworth five and dime store offered kites for ten cents a packet and we were happy to invest. A kite came in a straight package, and all you needed to do was carefully put it together, add a tail and some string, and wait for a nice breeze.

Our plan was for my brother to hold the kite up, and at a signal he would let it go. I would run and trust the winds to catch it, and that it would ascend to the sky.

Most of the time, it took a couple of tries, but soon we had our kite soaring and climbing up into the heavens. As the kite climbed, we would release a bit more of the twine to allow it more freedom - - and up it would go, higher and higher.

A tug now and then on the string would help keep the kite flying in the air. If the string was not strong enough, or had not been attached with care, it was possible for the kite to escape and go off into the world on its own. We knew this from experience as we would sadly see our precious kite floating over the horizon and eventually get tangled up in a mess in the brush of a tree.

How we wished we could have controlled our kite better so that these thickets could be avoided. Perhaps we gave it too much freedom and leniency, thus allowing the kite to think for it-self.

Oh how we blamed ourselves for not paying better attention to our kite and its adventures. Were we at fault? Actually not, but the guilt was still there.

Could we have done a better job in our preparation time, by securing the parts and pieces together with stronger tape, and twine? Probably not, but the remorse was still there.

Conceivably if kites could think for themselves, they should have paid more attention to their maker, and listened more carefully to the instructions given. Then they may have made better choices and avoided trouble.
Now they found themselves in such a mess that only God could get them out of.
If you have a kite in your household, as time goes on, it may be necessary for you to release your hold on your kite, and permit it to be it’s own kite. I do pray that they will not be hard headed as my kites sometimes were, and that they will fly quickly to their creator if they ever get into trouble.

The kite manufacturer has explicit instructions, and they are written in a big black manual, and it would be well if we all referred to them daily or even more often.

Deuteronomy 28:1-2 "Now it shall be, if you will diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. "And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you will obey the LORD your God.”

Red Light or Green Light

Over in the corner of my kitchen, sits my computer which is a cozy place to write, view and enjoy my coffee. On the end of my kitchen counter near my telephone, sits my two wire modem box with its shiny green lights alerting me that my DSL is on and working.

Well it was working  - - up until  three weeks ago when my telephone dial tone quit.

A call to the phone company on my emergency cell, gave me a message that in 5 days I would have service again. Five days passed and yes, for about 2 hours I had static and a dial tone, and then crash, it was down again. I dare not tell you the name of my phone company, but their initials are A T & T. Profits before service must be their motto! LOL

A repair man came out to fix my phone, but he found it necessary to inform us that the phone line, pole to pole was damaged. He would put in a report, but could not promise a time when it would be put back into working order.

Being a squeaky wheel was not helping, as each time I called, and listened to beautiful music for 15 minutes; the kind service representative informed me that my case was still open, and they were doing all they could to correct the problem.

The rain storms were not helping, and the fact that it was a few days before Christmas and the line crews were working on other problems, was of no comfort to me. I could not be consoled.

Each morning and during the day, as I entered my kitchen, I peered over at my 2 wire box and was continually dismayed because the red light on the DSL line that I viewed had not yet turned back to green.

Hope against hope that I could once again be able to get on-line, so I could retrieve my e-mail and post my blog, was beginning to dash all my faith in the phone company.

My telephone and computer communication has been broken and I am suffering untold distress! Oh me, oh my, what shall I do?

In life, when we break communion with God, we experience a spiritual spiral that leaves us without a trouble shooter. We encounter untold misery and we question, “Why?”

We remain in that miserable condition until WE take the steps necessary to “fix” the problem.

If it is something that we are holding on to that needs releasing, it is time to, “Let it go.”

Forgiveness is not an option, and it is time to let loose of events or grudges we are nurturing in our thought life. Forget, perhaps not, but forgive, yes.

Keep the telephone lines to heaven open with an unlocked heart and always share with Jesus, and he will get back to you sooner than the telephone company promises.

The green light is always on to Heaven, so make your call today! He is waiting!

P.S.  My land line is still down, and I am using a borrowed computer.  BUT my line to heaven is still active!

I rejoice Because of the Virgin Birth!!

As we consider this Christmas Season and celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ, I am so very thankful and rejoice for the Virgin Birth.

It is extremely important that we understand why the Virgin Birth was so necessary. The Bible tells us that the Life is in the Blood. Jesus said he was the Life and the light of Life.

When the first Adam sinned and took of the fruit in the garden something terrible happened to his body, his soul, and his spirit. He became sort of REVERSE born again or changed into a different person. His blood now had the sin nature which all mankind has inherited. 1 Corinthians 15:45 tells us that the Last Adam was Jesus. Jesus was not born with Adams sin nature because his father was God.

Dr. M.R. De Haan explains in his book, “The Chemistry of the Blood” that Physiologists have proven beyond question that the Mother does not impart her blood to the babe that is being formed. It has been proven that the blood that flows in the arteries and veins of the babe is from the father of the child.

http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/BTP/Dr_MR_DeHaan/Chemistry/toc.htm

Mary herself wondered and told the Angel, “How can this be since I have never known a man?”

The Angel told Mary that this Holy Child that will be formed in you will be conceived by the Holy Ghost, and the life in him will be from his Father God. Mary said to the Angel, “Let it be so unto me even as you have said.”

God needed a perfect blood sacrifice to atone for Adam’s sin.  Jesus was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. His blood was Holy because his blood was from his Father God. That is why it is so very important to be thankful for the Virgin Birth, so that the Holy Jesus could shed his Holy Blood so that we could be saved and changed into another person.

So my joy today is that I rejoice and I am thankful for the Virgin Birth and all it means to purchase yours and mine -- the gift of salvation.

1Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living soul," the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit.

Music Makes the Soul Rejoice

Our family looked forward to the monthly Musicals at the Oakland Auditorium in the early 1960s. Some times it was a Family group, and other times it was a variety of Men’s quartets. All the popular groups were happy to visit our city and to sing for us.

The Programs were free, but an offering was taken, and each group had their records for sale in the lobby. The offers were $5.00 for one record or $10 for three, and who can resist a bargain?

Our family loved any and all music, so we gathered a collection of records to play on our stereo at home.

The walls of our house resounded with the sweet tunes, about the Lord Jesus and about heaven and going home.

Music communicates to the soul, and the Bible tells us that the Angels sing the praises of God.

Singing is not only allotted to us as mortals, and the angels, but all the earth shall praise Him.

Even the trees sing:

1 Chronicles 16:33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD

And the Mountains and hills will sing:

Isaiah 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

The rocks and stones will cry out if we fail to praise the Lord and sing and shout unto Him.

Luke 19:37 *40 And when he was come nigh, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

It is amazing that we find that God also sings and rejoices over his children.

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Isaiah 62:5 As a young man marries a maiden, as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.

All earth and heaven shall resound with the Joys of the Lord as we echo, “Praise the Lord for He is worthy to be praised.”

Eight Redemptive Names of God

There are many names for God in the Bible, and eight of them are Redemptive Names.

Simply put with only a minor explanation as to the meaning, I place here the eight names.

JEHOVAH-JIREH

"The Lord our provider"

JEHOVAH-NISSI

"Our banner, a banner of love and protection".

JEHOVAH-SHALOM

"Our perfect peace"

JEHOVAH-TSID-KENU

"The Lord is our righteousness

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH

"The One Who is with us everywhere for He is Omnipresent"

JEHOVAH-SABAOTH

"The Lord of Hosts, our Protector."

C.H. Spurgeon said this about the phrase "The Lord of Hosts: The Lord rules the angels, the stars, the elements, and all the hosts of Heaven; and the Heaven of heavens is under His sway... [the Lord] is on our side -- our august Ally; woe unto those who fight against Him, for they shall flee like smoke before the wind when He gives the word to scatter them."

See text at Psalm 46:7.

JEHOVAH-RAAH

"Our Shepherd Who tenderly leads us, loves us and will keep us safe."

The term shepherd appears approximately 80 times in the Scriptures, denoting meanings of: feeder, keeper, companion, friend, pastor and herdsman.

JEHOVAH RAPHA รข€“

"I am the Lord Your Physician or I am the Lord Your Healer.”

Crabby Wanda - Guest Post by Nancy Kehr

Crabby Wanda - by Nancy

Saturday morning came early, but we were up for it. Perko’s had their early morning breakfast special for those who could make it between 5am and 8am. Randy and I scrambled, because we had a date! A couple of things popped up just as we were leaving home, so and we didn’t quite make it on time. Nuts!

We decided to stay anyway, and have a simple breakfast before tackling all our weekend errands. The place was packed! A veteran’s group was in the banquet room for a special meeting and most of the tables all over the restaurant were full……. except for one.

She sat staring out the window, coffee in hand. My view of her was partially blocked by some rowdy good ‘ole boys who talked to each other as if they were deaf!

Randy and I ordered but my gaze kept going back to the well-coiffed senior citizen sitting alone across the room. I contemplated her for a bit, and then, almost before I realized it, I was already up and running, while calling out to Randy that I’d be right back. He knows me by now, and just shook his head, smiling.

She seemed surprised as I approached her table. I introduced myself and asked her if she would allow me to pay for her meal. She appeared a bit startled.

“Wh-wh-why?” she asked, eyes wide open connecting with mine.

Her hair was perfect and she was well put together. Obviously she didn’t need ME to pay for her meal.

I told her that I’d like to be a blessing to her and let her know God loved her. We exchanged names, chatted a little more and then she consented, still wide-eyed. I patted her hand, took the check and proceeded immediately to the cashier.

At my explanation of whose ticket I was covering, the cashier said,

“Who? Crabby Wanda?”

Wanda was her name, so I said yes. A couple of restaurant staff started to chuckle. Someone was paying for Crabby Wanda. They told me she was always crabby, so they gave her that nickname. Apparently she came everyday for the breakfast special – always alone. She had been there longer than usual that morning,

“Well, now maybe she won’t be so crabby anymore,” I said brightly as I finished paying.

They quit snickering, and asked if I was doing this because it was the Christmas season. I let them know that I thought it was important to live “Giving” all year long, and that people had to be on the lookout for opportunities.

The opportunities are always there. Often they are not grand or press-worthy. That $6.33 was a small investment. Hopefully, three people’s lives were touched.

Cookie Exchange – Date Nut Bars

The Women’s Ministry ladies at our church, met on Tuesday and each lady brought home made cookies, enough for an exchange; and extra for Christmas treat baskets for shut-ins and others.

We were blessed by a medley of Christmas Carols by two gentlemen from another church which was enjoyed by all. We invited them and their wives to have the benefit of lunch with us.

One of our ladies brought a large kettle of her home made minestrone soup which was served with side of a tossed green salad and dinner rolls. It was such a treat for us all as we fellowshipped together. I asked my friend what she did to make the rich broth in her soup. She told me the secret was to use two cans of beans and mash them in a blender until they were smooth. Then I asked her if she had included her recipe in our church cook book that was recently printed, and she said, “It sure is in there.” I told her, “My husband will really like this one.”

As lunch was over, we dismissed to the kitchen to gather our selection of cookies. I took about 6 cookies and when I arrived home, I cut each one in half and made a fresh pot of coffee. My husband and I enjoyed the cookies together.

One of the cookies was a fruit bar and it reminded me of my most wonderful recipe for Date Nut bars, which I will include here. Do print it and save it for your own use.

Date Nut Bars
1 ½ to 2 cups chopped dates,
1 cup lemonade,
1/4 cup sugar;

Bring above items to a boil, turn down and simmer 5 minutes. Stir occasionally. Remove from burner and add 1/4 cup chopped nuts.
1/4 cup chopped almonds or walnuts.

Separately in a large bowl, blend and mix well:
1  1/2 cups flour,
1  1/2 cups quick oats,
1/2 cup brown sugar,
1/2 tsp soda,
1/3 tsp salt,
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup margarine or butter
Pat one half dry mixture into a 9x9 pan. Spread evenly the date mix over the dry mixture.
Gently pat the remaining oat mix on top and press firm. Bake at 357 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

I Caint Hep It

The influence from the South, and many of their sayings, were embedded in my husband, Robert; even though he had only spent a few of his early years in Tennessee, and in the Carolinas.

When I met him at age 19, his soft Southern accent was still evident after living many years in California.

A couple in our church took great pleasure in teasing Robert for the way he spoke, and he would shyly answer, “I caint hep it.”

There are many more, but these are several of the sayings that hung on to him for many years.

Y'all, whooped with the ugly stick, Ain't got, Fixin', Much obliged, No-count, Them there, Tote, Yonder, Ya'll Come Back, Now Ye Heer!

“Thanks till you are better paid,” was one I learned from my Father-in-law after I had helped them file their income tax report.

Little by little the sweet accent faded and along with it many of the sayings, as he learned to talk California Speak.

Language has many avenues. and as Christians, we must learn first and foremost to exercise and speak the Language of LOVE!

Luke 10:27 And Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all thy heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.

Boldness

As a young child, I was extremely shy, and in school if the teacher called on me to recite, my heart would pound and my face would turn a crimson red. I would suffer the flush flowing to my cheeks, and tears rushing to my eyes, and my body was almost frozen not allowing my mouth to speak. Fear has it’s torments !!

My teacher was wise, and she decided that to help me out of my shell, she would give me some responsibility.

A few days later, she led me into the children’s library that was next to our first grade room, and showed me how to place the books on the shelf in their order by author. She told me that I was now in charge of the library. I suppose that began my love for books and the printed word.  Also it may have been the beginning of (at times,) me being an in-charge person!

One day, my teacher decided to divide the class into three reading groups. As she called the names for group one, I was not included. Group two was called and I heard my name. I was stunned. Although it was not the actual case, I perceived group two and three to mean, inferior and less important than group one, and I was not happy.

The teacher was speaking, “Group one will please come with me into the Library, and the others will stay and study their lesson.” Group one stood and began to follow the teacher. I also stood and tagged along with the others. The teacher noticed immediately and gently told me, “Hazel, you are in group two.” I boldly spoke up and said firmly, “I am number one.” The teacher, hid a smile, and said, “alright, I will include you in group one.”

That incident of being bold did NOT cure me of my shyness, or embarrassment when I was called on, but I was emotionally rewarded for having stood up for what I believed at the time.

Do you ever break out in a cold sweat, your heart pounds like a drum, and the palms of your hands are wet with fear? I must insert here, “Join the Club.”

Most of us suffer with times of hesitancy to step forward when there is a need to make a stand. Many of our fears are imaginary and we fanaticize what might happen if we act.

Joyce Meyer has a saying that has meant a lot to me, and it is: “DO it AFRAID.”

The next good piece of advice is to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. If the Lord is telling you, to speak up, shut up, go forward, get out, stay there - - be quick to listen, and if it lines up with the Word of God, and you have peace about it, then obey.

Boldness comes with practice, and each time you listen and obey, you will gain confidence. The Holy Spirit is our helper, and He gives strength to the weak, and might and power to those who will make the effort to ask Him for it, and believe it is for you.

Be Bold, be confident, and know that God will open doors for you, simply be courageous enough to enter each door, and you will be amazed what God will do through you.

Proverbs 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Four Fingers Pointing Back at You

My husband’s Sunday School class of young pre-teen age boys sat at rapt attention as their teacher told amazing stories from the Bible. At the end of each lesson came a life application, and they boys would discuss how they could serve Jesus in their own way.

If one of his students was absent, my husband would visit, or call to encourage them to return the next Sunday.

One Sunday, a fine young man, was not there and was sorely missed. My husband, contacted the parents, and he was informed that the family had just purchased a boat, and they would not be attending church while the weather was so nice.

My husband emphasized the importance for their children to be in Sunday School and also in church,, but the mother, boldly stated that Sunday was the only day they had available to use the boat, and they needed to make use of their investment as a family outing. We never saw this family at church again.

Many months passed, and one day my husband noticed the mother of the young man in a local store where he was shopping. She recognized him and immediately came up to him with an accusing look on her face.

She began her sad story, “Our son got involved in drugs, and he recently died from an overdose.”

My husband expressed his sorrow and sympathy for the family, and this is what he heard back from the grieving mother;

You were his Sunday School teacher, and I blame you for not doing a better job at teaching him.”

My husband knew this lady was hurting, and he doubted if she believed what she had just spoken. My husband was not prepared to explain the responsibilities of parents to teach their children at home, and to also keep them in church and especially in Sunday School.

We have known other parents who asked “Why did my child end up this way?” And I can remember more than one family who attended church rather regularly, but we hardly ever saw their children in Sunday School. I do not know what Spiritual training they received at home, but I wonder.

I am a firm believer in the Sunday School, for it is there, that children are given a foundation on their own grade level of the concept of God and His love for them.

I must not leave out Vacation Bible Schools as an excellent spiritual teaching tool for grade school children. Avail yourself of every avenue to expose your children to God.

Then there are the Bible Clubs held in homes and at schools, sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship. This is where my youngest child received Jesus into her heart.

I do hope your children are following Jesus, and if not, please do not point fingers, because the truth is - - there are four fingers pointing back at YOU.

Jesus at the Catalog Store

I returned to work at the Old Wards Catalog store, and was assigned to the catalog orders in the pricing department on the third floor.

There were no computers in those days, and we used a large flip pages book. I was given the department that sold curtains, drapes, and all the supplies associated with them.  If the customer failed to look in the sale book, we gave them the better price and adjusted their order. This job did not end at Christmas, because they needed me to stay on and fill an empty position.

One day, my co-worker accidentally burnt her finger with her cigarette during break time. She was in pain, and she let me know of her discomfort. I reached over and placed my hand over hers, and spoke a quick prayer. Actually it was not a prayer, but a proclamation. “In Jesus name I command this pain to stop!” She was surprised and pleased to inform me that there was no more pain, and we continued to work.

Another lady was upset about a family member delving into homosexuality. I always carried a small New Testament in my purse, and I quickly scurried to her station and showed her Romans chapter one and the verses about the depraved mind. She had never seen these verses before, and was happy to know about them. She said, “Tell me again where to find that, and I will look it up in my Bible at home.”

While we were working, actually there was no time for teaching and preaching, because we were timed with each stack or orders we were given. I made my quota that day, because I was learning to be quick and sharp to the point.

The job location is not supposed to be a witnessing tool, but God does open doors and when you see one, it is time to quickly and softly walk through it. Otherwise, just allow your light to shine, and often that is enough. Much can be said about the silent witness.

In the work place, during lunch break, do bow your head, and give God thanks for your food. That is the greatest silent testimony that there is. By this action you can also discover fellow Christians in your workplace.
One of my co-workers was a girl from Sweden. She spoke English well, and shared with me that she learned English at her school. Because she was staying with a family near by, I was happy to provide a ride each way, which was a testimony to her.

Little acts of kindness, is another way to show the Love of Jesus. Be prepared, and look for them each day.

Reach out and touch others, if not with your hands, at least with your prayers.

Actions of love will go a long way in showing the Love of Jesus.

Look at Ugree Man, Momeee! Guest Post by Nancy

Guest Post by my daughter Nancy Kehr

Look at Ugree Man, Momeee!

Shopping at the Bakery Outlet store once a month was great fun for me, and for my small son, Aaron! I am not sure exactly why he’d get so happy once I plunked him into a cart, and began wheeling throughout the store, but he did! His little legs kicked in delight when we came to the hostess cupcakes. Although we rarely got many of those snacks, he had a good memory!

Aaron was an observer and didn’t garble like a lot of small children. He was bright and could talk from an early age, demonstrating an excellent, understandable vocabulary by 18 months.

Cupcakes! His smile brightened as I put one package in the cart. He giggled and squiggled happily as more bread and treats were placed in the cart.

Then, the little smile turned to a look of horror! He became dead still, and pointing, squealed loudly,

“Lookee, ugree man, momeeee!”

My heart sped up and I felt the heat creeping to my face. Even though I wanted to, I didn’t dare to look around. Before I could even think, my son immediately repeated himself even more loudly!!

I grabbed his little arm and pushed his finger down, admonishing him to be quiet! As I did, a man passed by with his cart. A horribly blotchy, raised birthmark covered half of his face like some eerie, ill-fitting mask.

Aaron’s eyes were wide open in amazement … and again, with the pointing! I grabbed him.

“Choc-cat,” he yelled, “He gots choc-cat on face!”

My stomach churned. Where was that door, anyway? I felt like running!

I couldn’t look at this poor fellow! I just pretended to tend to my child. I was busy trying to stuff a Twinkie into his mouth so he couldn’t SAY anything more.

The man started to laugh! He said a couple of things which I’m sure were conciliatory, but I was still too caught up in myself to process what was being said.

While I’m not so sure his words actually helped ME at the moment, I experienced modest relief. I was able to get through the checkout stand, albeit my cheeks were still burning.

Pondering this later, I wish I had been able to say something clever to the gentleman. Instead, all I was thinking about was me and how embarrassed I was.

What about him? I am sure he faced numerous unkind-nesses all throughout his whole life. Evidentially he had learned to be resilient, and appeared to have become settled in himself. All things aside, he seemed to be sorry for me at the time, his gracious behavior revealing a handsome inner person!

Hmmm. And….… he had a pretty wife. I remember her smile.

These thoughts rushed over me recently when, in church, I noticed a man with a large purple birthmark covering nearly half of his face. He and his beautiful wife walked into the restaurant where we were with our kids after church. They seemed to recognize us.

We smiled and nodded at them. I asked God to bless Him….and, to bless that other man if he was still around.

Nothing and no one is perfect!

Graciousness, kindness, sympathy, compassion, thoughtfulness, consideration, understanding toward others; these entire can go a long way in ameliorating the hustle-and-bustle of life!

Black Friday and Breakfast Pizza

I am not a morning person, and although the Black Friday specials are alluring, no way am I getting up that early for the best bargains.  I leave that to my husband and my son and my son-in-law and those who are willing and able to get up and GO that early.

A few years back, my daughter did convince me to go shopping with her starting at 9:00 am (definitely not 4:00 am.)

I had the Thanksgiving Holiday Day off from work, and because my family was visiting, I requested a Friday Vacation day which gave me a long week end.  So my daughter and I took off to shop at the Chico Mall.

I did not notice the newspaper reporter taking our photo, but as we searched the counters for the perfect pajamas and night gowns - - we were snapped.

The next Monday when I reported for work, one of my supervisors informed me that my picture was in the paper as a shopper, and she emphasized that it was a good thing I had NOT called in SICK on Friday!!

Anyway, I was glad too, for my mother always told me, “Be sure your sin will find you out.”  Therefore I have learned from childhood, to always be truthful and honest. (Smile.)

Arriving back home, we dined on the Breakfast Pizza we rescued from the fridge and placed into the oven.

Here is my Award Winning recipe handed down to me from Mary Farrell.

Breakfast Pizza
1 package crescent rolls
1 lb bulk pork sausage
1 cup frozen hash brown potatoes
1 cup shredded sharp cheese
5 eggs
¼ cup milk
½ tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
2 T parmesan cheese

Cook sausage until browned. Drain off fat. Separate rolls into rectangles and place into un-greased pizza pan with points toward the center. Press over bottom and up sides to form crust, sealing perforations.

Spoon the sausage into crust. Sprinkle with potatoes. Top with shredded cheese. Beat eggs, add salt, pepper and milk, and pour over the crust. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top. Bake in 375 degree oven for 25 minutes, or until eggs are set. Serves 6 to 8

Not Returnable

Due to a family situation, my Mother-in-law, Bea had come to live with us for awhile.

I told Bea, “Two women in the kitchen is one too many, so I am going to work at Montgomery Wards and you can be the cook and keep house.” She thought that was an excellent idea and said that was fine by her.

I was not new to working at Montgomery Ward, as I had worked there the previous Christmas season. Wards hired me in the catalog department and put me on the early morning shift. I needed to be at work by 5:00 am and was to get off work at 2:00 pm. This gave me time to get home and welcome my children as they arrived from school.

We changed our morning routine, and I asked Bea to have each child take a Scripture promise from the promise box and read it as they left for school. I had been saying a prayer over each child as they left for the day, and now that was altered too. Our prayers were now in the evening and a Bible story time as they went to bed.

Bea refused to be paid for her work in the kitchen, as she declared that she owed us for letting her stay there. “But - - if you insist,” she said, “You can buy me an outfit from those clearance pages they give the employees.”

Now if you knew my mother-in-law, you knew she loved to shop. The most exciting part of shopping, for Bea, was the taking back the item after she had brought it home.

We both knew that these items in the close out pages, were not returnable or refundable and they were ours to keep, once purchased.

We would search through those close out pages, and find just the right size, and we ordered some really nice dresses for a pittance of the regular price. One for you and one for me was our motto. Every pay day, we would go shopping in the pages of the old sales books with our close out sheet for guidance.

Fortunately we were the same size, and after Bea would wear her dress, she asked if we could trade. I did not mind a bit, and it was fun to have a selection. Next best thing to returning the item for Bea, was to swap with me.

After several months, things got better with her family situation, and Bea moved back home with her husband.

Now the great thing was, they happened to live within walking distance of Montgomery Wards. Bea could now shop and return items to her hearts content.

God has something wonderful for you and it is Not returnable and is Not refundable.

It is His gift of Salvation. Just open you heart and allow Jesus to come into your life.

Working at the Old Wards Store

Christmas of 1954 was approaching, and the Montgomery Ward Catalog store near us was hiring Christmas help.

I thought this sounded like a good temporary job and it would assist me with my Christmas shopping.

I applied and they asked me to take a math test working simple problems in my head.

The job I was to have, consisted of breaking down the order if something came from another Catalog store; splitting the tax between each portion, adding the shipping for each store and doing it all quite fast. No calculators were allowed, and because we were good at math, it was faster this way.

My supervisor brought me a stack of orders every 20 minutes, and she explained that she would increase the amount of orders until I could do a set number. I thought to myself, “It is not possible.” But would you believe it? Soon I was speedily sending out my quota.

In those days, the pay came in an envelope in cash. Usually there was a couple of crisp $2. bills along with other bills and change. I saved all the $2. bills and as time went on, used them to slip into birthday cards.

Employees were given close out sheets listing bargains in the older catalogues. I was able to secure some nice items at very low prices, which made me happy and also my children. We were to have a great Christmas!

About two weeks before Christmas we were all laid off, and it suited me fine. I enjoyed my short stay and returned the next year to do similar work again for a short period of time.

Not everything in life is permanent. Some things are for a season and to be enjoyed while we have them. Savor the moment and love unconditionally, especially your family.

I realize the need of being able to “Let go,” each time I hear of a loved one who has passed on to Glory. My comfort is that I will see them again, but for now they will be missed.

Most of my Uncles and Aunts have gone to be with the Lord, only my Aunt Edna, age 96 and my own mother of 99 years remain, from their time period, and are still with us.

The Bible seems to indicate that God gives us at least 70 years to enjoy this life. Both my husband and I have surpassed that mark, and we believe for more years to come.

In the mean while what ever your hand finds to do, do it well with all your might,” and enjoy the day before you. Live and love life, and live for Jesus, loving Him most of all.
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
