TURTLE BAR COOKIES

When our children were growing up, I baked cookies each week for their lunches.

Often I made these Ooo-ee Goo-ee Cookie Bars and they were a favorite. They reminded us of Turtle Candy and I suppose a better name would be Turtle Bar Cookies.

When it comes to a good box of Chocolate candy, the ones I like the best are the ones with nuts and caramels. I think that is why I like these cookies so well.

TURTLE BAR COOKIES

1 lb Kraft caramels (approximately 40 wrapped caramels)
1/3 cup evaporated milk
German chocolate or chocolate cake mix with pudding in the mix
1/2 to 3/4 cup melted butter or margarine
1/3 cup  evaporated milk
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 to 1 cup chopped nuts

Melt together the unwrapped caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk on low heat.

In a large bowl combine cake mix, melted butter, 1/3 cup evaporated milk to make a batter. Press half of the cake batter in a greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes and remove from oven.

Sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts over hot baked cake. Then pour the melted caramel mixture over the cake. Crumble the rest of the cake mix by teaspoonfuls over the caramel layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool. Makes 24 bars.
