Red and Yellow Black and White

The year was 1951 and after dinner each evening, we would wrap up our first born baby in blankets and walk the two blocks from our apartment over to Robert’s Uncle Ern’s place to watch his new Television.

Cowboys and Indians was the fair to middling each evening. Hop A Long Cassidy was a favorite along with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans - - all in black and white.

One evening my husband announced that we needed to get our own TV. There was one on sale for $250 that sounded like a good one to him.

We had just finished paying off our refrigerator at $10 a month, so our budget could easily stretch to fit in a TV.

I was not so sure, because our church was having their annual Missionary Convention and pledges were to be taken on Sunday for the missionaries that our church supported.

“What do you think if we pledged that $250 to Missions? Do you think that the Lord would also allow us to purchase a TV,” I hesitantly asked my husband.

He thought for a minute and then emphatically replied, “Yes, I believe God would approve of us having a TV, and I suppose we can swing the missionary pledge too.”

The previous year we had only pledged $50 to missions, so this was a big step. We needed to believe for work because some days my hubby only worked a couple of days each week.

God blessed us, and a roofing contractor who liked Robert, hired him almost full time.

Now we could watch the news, some game shows and also our favorite Cow Boy movies all in black and white.

We were also pleased that our Missionary dollars were going around the world to various cultures, some to black and some to white.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we did think our set was beautiful. Several years went by until we decided to upgrade to a new TV set that offered a Color picture.

I am reminded of the song we used to sing in Sunday School; “Jesus Loves the Little Children, all the children of the world, Red and Yellow, Black and White, they are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.”

These days, we enjoy our big screen Colored Television, and we are also happy that our dollars continue to journey over oceans, over hills and valleys, over continents and are still traveling to all the colors of the world.

Man I love your stories... It's been a while since I urged you to write a novel, base upon your life and how the principles and character was so prevalent and how God blessed you for your faith and perspective. I'm asking you again, it's exactly what the world needs. Your faith in action of running the good race is encouraging. God bless you and your husband Hazel.

Hi Hazel,

I love the quote from Mother Teresa; "It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." What a perfect quote for you and your husband's generous and faithful hearts! One of the great and unique promises of the Bible is that the more we give, the more we receive; not necessarily in material possessions, but in spiritual and eternal rewards! Bless you both for funding missions all these years; the Lord has rewarded you abundantly with His grace and love! :)

Blessings and hugs,
Denise

Isn't God amazing?! When we put God first, He always blesses us right back. When we color the world with HIS love, God is faithful to color our world as well. :)

Beautiful, faith-infusing post. Thank you for sharing this story and for linking up for "Heartprint Hallelujahs!". Hope to see you again next Friday~

I remember those days/years. The Lone Ranger was one of my favorites AND Sky King. I was in 2nd grade when I saw these. We sometimes had a TV, but I'm not sure when it was around or why. Another show: Man With a Camera. Charles Bronson. Most people don't even realize he was on TV back then, b/4 he hit movies. Actually, enjoyed TV more than and for many following years than I do now... it's too dangerous in these days with the language, etc., and even the commercials. Life has certainly changed.

Glad you were so so blessed and blessed so many others around the world. Love doing it. It'll be fun when we get to heaven and see the consequences of our choices re: spreading the Word.
