Creeks and Kids

Creeks and Kids

With the price of gas these days, we don’t often travel to our near by city where there is a large discount market and other interesting stores.  On a recent occasion, as we returned home, I noted a sign in a wooded area along the highway that said, “Creeks and Kids,” apparently it was advertising an educational adventure.

Immediately my mind went racing back to my childhood when we lived in the Oakland East Bay Area that contains many creeks and lakes throughout different neighborhoods, including the surround hills.

Not far from our home was a narrow creek that ran for several miles, eventually emptying into the Alameda, Estuary.

To us children, it was cheap entertainment to take an empty mayonnaise jar or a tin can and explore “our creek.”  The water was not deep but you could easily get your shoes wet if you failed to step on the many rocks.

Pollywogs were in abundance in different degrees of development, and my brother and I were interested in any creature that wiggled.  If you lifted one of the slabs, you might find a salamander and hopefully avoid any snakes that might be hiding in the reeds.

What is it about playing in the water that kids find it so intriguing?

As I considered that our bodies are made up of a great percentage of water it reminds me that water is so very important.

Jesus spoke of living water that He offered to the woman at the well.

John 4:13, 14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinks of this water (from the well) shall thirst again:  But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; - - - but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus also spoke of the Holy Spirit as a river flowing out from us to others with this living water.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Some have concluded that our born again “spirit man including our soul” resides in our heart or in our chest area - - - however scholars have determined that dwelling place  actually is in our belly, our innermost being.

When you think about it our stomach is often where we feel grief, sorrow, happiness, or joy.  From our belly comes God’s direction; a slang expression is a “gut feeling.”

Might it be a good thing if we pat our tummy and give ourselves a challenge prophesy?

“Out of 'MY belly' shall flow rivers of living water to those who are thirsty."

How about you? Have you had a good drink of Living Water lately?

I love your thoughts about our soul being our belly or "gut". It's in our innermost being somewhere! I just want it to be restored and renewed to be more and more like Jesus and, yes, to be overflowing with living water!

What a great connection with the water of the Word. Glad to have met you at Sunday Stillness.

Well, as usual you did some talking and thinking and historically sharing. I am definitely NOT a snake person, but AM a river person. Always love to see the river and ocean and falls, and I always think of the Lord and THANK the Lord. Bless you.

Water is such a perfect way to describe Jesus. It's something we need to survive and something that gives us so much joy and fascinates us, especially as children. I have my own happy water memories from the lakes that we always had around when I was growing up.
